Organizational Development

Boards need to be trained/supported with learning the skills to maximize the Board’s potential and ability to grow the organization. Starting with a needs assessment, the Board needs to understand where the organization is in its trajectory and the steps necessary to develop/strengthen the organization. Concrete plans can be started to support these efforts. Boards need to understand the importance of a business plan and the impact of marketing on growing the initiative. Organizations will need funds to grow, and designing a pathway to garner and increase these funds is imperative.

  • Needs assessment

  • SWOT analysis

  • Business planning

  • Marketing/communications plan

  • Board development

  • Fund development

Strategic Planning/Visioning

It is important for Boards to develop a strategic mindset. Traditionally, strategic plans encompass a three to five year “look forward.” CBSC prefers to operate in a more here and now posture. Three years can be an eternity for a young non-profit. The Board needs to understand that a strategic/vision plan is a “living” document that needs to evolve and change in the event circumstances dictate i.e the ability to pivot.

The Components of Strategic Planning are:

  • SWOT analysis

  • Interview/survey constituencies

  • Understanding of a vision mindset

  • Identify key components of strategic plan

  • Draft a plan looking out three to five years

Executive Coaching/Supporting Established Nonprofits

Nonprofits as they grow can take on paid staff to help advance the organization. The leaders of the organization can often benefit from outside, objective, experienced, eyes to help navigate the growth of the organization. As nonprofits grow the relationship between staff and the Board needs to evolve.

  • Support for the chief executive through active listening

  • Delineation of roles, executive side vs Board side

  • Creation of a transparent leadership culture, decision making process

  • Mediation between various constituencies within the organization
